Bio

Jill Stoddard was born in Gardner, Massachusetts in 1968 (Gen X) and grew up in Ashby, Massachusetts next to hundreds of acres of forest. She made her first drawing at age 5 of a woman holding a cow under her arm, and wrote her first story at age 6, about a bear and an ice cube who became friends. After high school, Jill attended UMass/Amherst and earned an MA in English with a focus on creative writing.

Jill spent the 1990s living in the Mission in San Francisco and Cambridge, Massachusetts. During these years she wrote for Cups, Might magazine and published around 50 words in McSweeney's. She was also accepted to Emerson College for MFA in fiction.

In 2000 she moved to Greenpoint, Brooklyn and over the next 16 years she focused on oil painting and drawing using found objects and cardboard as canvases; site-specific installations; and storytelling. In 2016, she began to split her time between her studio in Philadelphia and her apartment in Brooklyn. Jill has worked various full-time jobs to support herself.

In 2022, Jill moved back to Massachusetts. She lives in Greenfield.
